A Little Buddha for Good Luck

Do you have a little Buddha statue in your home for good luck? Let’s talk straight. If that little statue is bringing you any luck (good or bad), then it is more than a statue. We both know statues are made from cement or other common materials. They have no power in and of themselves. If your statue is endowed with power, then it has a source and God is not it. How can I be sure?

Buddha’s claim is contradictory to Jesus’ claim. The ancient man called Buddha claimed to know a different way than Jesus. Yet Jesus specifically said, “I am the way.” He did not say one of many ways. He said “the way.” Millions of people have adopted Buddhism as their religion instead of accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior. Buddhism and all of its ways are in opposition to Christianity.

What about you? Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? If yes, then stop advertising a false way. Stop trying to gain fortune outside of God’s will. Toss out the statue. Pray to God for the blessings you want in your life. If that is what is best for you, our powerful God will delight in bestowing the blessing and provision you want in your life because He loves you.

Judgement

You have heard it, and so have I. Maybe you have even said it or thought it. It is the phrase: I don’t want to be judged. We think if we somehow hide our real selves around when we are around our Christian friends or leave out certain details from the stories we tell that we can avoid judgement. Unfortunately, hiding our real selves robs us from authentic relationships and close friendships.

The fear of judgement can be even more harmful when we apply it to our spiritual lives and relationships. You may be rejecting the idea of salvation or delaying acceptance of Christ because you fear being judged by God. The Bible tells us we will all be judged whether we come to Christ or not. In fact, our decision for Christ now washes us clean of all of those mistakes and sins that we feel ashamed about so that God only sees a spotless version of us. If you do not come to Jesus now for our salvation, then we will be judged according to our many sins by a perfect God with no hope for justification, redemption, or purification.

The Bible says, “…today is the day of salvation.” We are not guaranteed a single more day in this lifetime, and judgement is certain. You admit you are a sinner—I admire that! You are ashamed of your sins—that’s admirable too! Now take the additional step and ask Christ for your salvation so that you can be judged a pure and spotless saint. Then you can enjoy eternal life with the rest of God’s people.

A New Type of Prayer

A few years ago, I edited a free ebook called Never Forsaken: A Testimony Collection. Something miraculous happened as I read the submissions. My own faith grew. Of course I had faith God exists, but I did not necessarily know how to apply all of the promises God has for us in the Bible.

I learned one such promise and application when I read one of the testimony submissions by a woman named Kristen Nelson. She shared a testimony of how God healed her wrists and included a Scripture from John 10:10. It says, “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”  She didn’t have inoperable brain cancer. She simply wanted a fuller life.

Sometimes people are afraid to pray for God to help us in little ways as though He were too busy or something. Other times they are scared to ask God to help people on their deathbed because we are all destined to die. This is my new prayer for people on their deathbed. “Dear Lord: All of our days are numbered, but You came to give us life abundantly. While this person is here on earth, give them life to the fullest.  Thank You for being our Healer. In Christ’s Name, Amen.”

A few days ago, I prayed it over my elderly cat who has not been well. That particular day she would not eat and could hardly stand. We were all preparing our hearts for her death. Then I prayed this prayer over my cat. Guess what? The very next day she was eating and walking around. She even ran upstairs! She may die tomorrow, but today she is living life to the fullest because God is good.

The Truth

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life….” —Revelation 20:12

In the first twenty years of my life, I had never experienced anything supernatural. To me, science seemed to explain how the universe and humans had come into existence. I had heard the gospel several times, but I did not believe the Bible contained much truth. I had never had a personal relationship with God or heard His voice.

That changed one night in 1997. I was all alone. Then I heard a booming voice. It said, “God is real, and the Bible is truth.” I had tingles all over my body. I felt warm. I knew something spiritual was happening to me. With the knowledge that God is real, I gave my life to Christ. It was the best decision I have ever made. That was just the beginning of my love story with my amazing Lord.

God Speaks Through His Word

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” —2 Timothy 3:16-17

Sometimes I ask God to speak to me. Then I open the Bible to some random spot of the New Testament and read the first red-lettered words of Christ I see. Have you ever done that? Much of the time I cannot make any connection between Jesus’ words and my situation, but I have faith God is somehow speaking to me through His Word. I have good reason to believe that.

It started in recent years. I began asking God to speak to me before I went to bed at night. I would pick up the Bible on my nightstand, open the Bible to some random spot in the New Testament, read Christ’s words, put the book down, and then go to sleep. Then the strangest thing started happening. Every night for a week, I would open to the same spot and read the same verse! I thought there must be a folded page or something in that Bible so I went to use another Bible. I opened it randomly and opened the same verse! It continued for at least a month. Then it started happening again with a different verse! Then another one. I received an A in my college statistics course so I know the odds of this happening over and over again are incredibly remote. God speaks to us through His Word. Even if we don’t understand how it applies to our situation, He is mindful of our desire to know Him more.

Re: Contradictions

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you cannot trust the Bible because it is full of contradictions. My question for you is this: Have you personally or with the help of another sought out solutions to the contradictions? Many seeming contradictions describe similar but separate events or have other explanations. If you are just looking for an excuse to disbelieve the Bible, then you will not believe the best explanations provided by Biblical scholars or even your own common sense interpretation. However if you are willing to accept that the Bible contains some ambiguous truths, then you will soon realize the Holy Bible is more than a book. It contains real answers about God’s nature and plan for mankind.  Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

Re: Your Shame

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to be a Christian, but you do not think you deserve God. You said you are so ashamed and regretful of your past. The truth is, my friend, that none of us deserve God or his salvation. We can never make up for the past. Yet, your sins have already been paid by Jesus when he died on the cross. If you accept him, your sins are completely washed away. You will be clean in the sight of God. Not only that, but he will fill you with his Holy Spirit so that you will have a guide to steer you away from sinful behavior in the future. Even if you mess up and sin more, those sins will also be washed away. Since your soul will be completely free of sin, you will be acceptable to God and reconciled as his child. He will welcome you into eternal life in his kingdom. All of this is completely free. None of us deserve it or earn our salvation. We simply accept God’s grace. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God….” (Ephesians 2:8)

Re: Your Love for Sin

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to become a Christian, but you love sin. You said you think hell would be more fun than heaven. Well, my friend, I do not think you mean what you say when you say. Sin includes so much more than drunken parties and reckless behavior. It includes human trafficking, murder of innocent children, rape, abuse, and so much more. Considering this, let me ask you again: Do you really love sin? I do not think you really love sin; you like the way those sins work together with your body chemistry to feel better. In heaven, humans do not have that same need to feel better because they are already enraptured all of the time since they live in the presence of God. God is love, and Christians will feel the miraculous power of his limitless love every day without the need to feel better. Do not let your soul perish in hell. Claim your opportunity to accept forgiveness for your sins so that you can live forever with our Maker. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. This is what the Bible tells us will happen in the future: “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father….” (Matthew 13:41-43)

Re: Abuse

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to want to become a Christian, but you cannot understand how a loving God would have allowed you to be abused. You said you are both ashamed and angry about the past. The abuse you endured is not your fault. You do not have to go on feeling ashamed. You cannot hide your feelings from God so go ahead and tell him how you feel in prayer. Reach out and ask for help from a counselor. One day, you will be able to feel joy and hope once more. Mankind has chosen to rebel against God, and that is why we suffer the consequences of sin. The suffering is not isolated to you. Millions of people suffer from physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect. Other children may not suffer abuse, but they live without clean water, a reliable source of food, or proper shelter. Yet others may live a normal life until they try to conceive and are unable to have children. Then they become devastated. One hundred percent of people in this life face some kind of suffering. God does not want us to live in suffering. He desires to love us, protect us, and wipe away every tear for eternity in heaven. If you want this, it is time to turn to him and ask him to save you. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. This is what the Bible tells us about our future with God in heaven: “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:4-5).
