I’m a Good Person

You may think you are a good person. I don’t doubt it but only by comparison to other people. Compared to God, you are not a good person. Let’s take a look at some of the standards God set forth for mankind, also known as the Ten Commandments.

  1. Have no other gods but God.
  2. Do not worship statues.
  3. Be careful with God’s name. (Only when you are talking to or specifically about God with reverence—never saying OMG or using the Savior’s Name as a cuss word.)
  4. Remember the Sabbath. (Rest from work and dedicate the day to worship).
  5. Honor your father and mother (yes both of them).
  6. Do not murder.
  7. Keep your marriage vows (all of them.)
  8. Do not steal (not even a pen).
  9. Do not lie (even little lies).
  10. Do not covet (or wrongly desire what belongs to someone else).

Even if you kept some of these, you did not keep all of them perfectly. Even if you did, there are many more wrongdoings that qualify as sins. Even knowing the right thing to do in a circumstance and failing to do it is a sin according to God.

Yet somehow Jesus kept every commandment perfectly. How? Because He is the Son of God. The good news is He died to pay for your sins and the sins of the whole world. If you die, please don’t try to justify your sins by saying “I’m a good person.” Your best bet is to simply say, “Jesus died for my sins.” In God’s eyes, Jesus is a good person.

Re: Contradictions

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you cannot trust the Bible because it is full of contradictions. My question for you is this: Have you personally or with the help of another sought out solutions to the contradictions? Many seeming contradictions describe similar but separate events or have other explanations. If you are just looking for an excuse to disbelieve the Bible, then you will not believe the best explanations provided by Biblical scholars or even your own common sense interpretation. However if you are willing to accept that the Bible contains some ambiguous truths, then you will soon realize the Holy Bible is more than a book. It contains real answers about God’s nature and plan for mankind.  Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

Re: Your Shame

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to be a Christian, but you do not think you deserve God. You said you are so ashamed and regretful of your past. The truth is, my friend, that none of us deserve God or his salvation. We can never make up for the past. Yet, your sins have already been paid by Jesus when he died on the cross. If you accept him, your sins are completely washed away. You will be clean in the sight of God. Not only that, but he will fill you with his Holy Spirit so that you will have a guide to steer you away from sinful behavior in the future. Even if you mess up and sin more, those sins will also be washed away. Since your soul will be completely free of sin, you will be acceptable to God and reconciled as his child. He will welcome you into eternal life in his kingdom. All of this is completely free. None of us deserve it or earn our salvation. We simply accept God’s grace. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God….” (Ephesians 2:8)

Re: Your Unanswered Prayers

Dear Doubting Thomas,You said you want to be a Christian, but your prayers go unanswered. I have a question for you. Do all of your prayers really go unanswered? What about the really desperate ones? Like when your life was in danger? Many people shrug off answered prayers as a coincidence. Deciding whether or not be a Christian holds eternal consequences so it is necessary to be absolutely certain your prayers really do go unanswered. Try this: 1) Buy a journal. 2) Write a simple, unselfish, realistic prayer that you would like to be answered. 3) Leave some space to write at the bottom whether it was answered, unanswered, or answered in a surprising way.  4) If you still have doubt, add another prayer. You can keep adding prayer requests until you are content with your conclusion. It may take a little more effort than silently wishing, but this method will give you an objective, rational basis for your mindset. God really does hear your prayers, and he is eager to reveal his nature to someone who truly wants to know. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1John 5:14).

Re: Your Love for Sin

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to become a Christian, but you love sin. You said you think hell would be more fun than heaven. Well, my friend, I do not think you mean what you say when you say. Sin includes so much more than drunken parties and reckless behavior. It includes human trafficking, murder of innocent children, rape, abuse, and so much more. Considering this, let me ask you again: Do you really love sin? I do not think you really love sin; you like the way those sins work together with your body chemistry to feel better. In heaven, humans do not have that same need to feel better because they are already enraptured all of the time since they live in the presence of God. God is love, and Christians will feel the miraculous power of his limitless love every day without the need to feel better. Do not let your soul perish in hell. Claim your opportunity to accept forgiveness for your sins so that you can live forever with our Maker. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. This is what the Bible tells us will happen in the future: “The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father….” (Matthew 13:41-43)

Re: Abuse

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to want to become a Christian, but you cannot understand how a loving God would have allowed you to be abused. You said you are both ashamed and angry about the past. The abuse you endured is not your fault. You do not have to go on feeling ashamed. You cannot hide your feelings from God so go ahead and tell him how you feel in prayer. Reach out and ask for help from a counselor. One day, you will be able to feel joy and hope once more. Mankind has chosen to rebel against God, and that is why we suffer the consequences of sin. The suffering is not isolated to you. Millions of people suffer from physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect. Other children may not suffer abuse, but they live without clean water, a reliable source of food, or proper shelter. Yet others may live a normal life until they try to conceive and are unable to have children. Then they become devastated. One hundred percent of people in this life face some kind of suffering. God does not want us to live in suffering. He desires to love us, protect us, and wipe away every tear for eternity in heaven. If you want this, it is time to turn to him and ask him to save you. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. This is what the Bible tells us about our future with God in heaven: “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:4-5).

Re: Death of a Loved One

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you want to be a Christian, but you cannot imagine a kind God letting your loved one die. You said you just want to know why. First, I want to say how sorry I am for your loss. It can be so painful to deal with those feelings of grief, shock, sorrow, loneliness, emptiness, among others. Knowing a specific reason why that person has passed on would not necessarily help you deal with your emotions. Getting help to express your emotions will comfort you. If you feel angry or bitter at God, you can open up and be honest with him in prayer that you feel that way and ask him to comfort you and to relieve that pain. It can be helpful to express your feelings by chatting with a friend, meeting with a counselor, journaling your feelings, channeling your feelings into some artistic expression, or even by exercising. Somehow it can feel so personal when someone close to us dies, but I can assure it is nothing personal. Our bodies all die at one time or other, whether it is due to disease, accidents, old age, or something else. The good news is our souls can live eternally with God if we trust Jesus for our salvation. The worst decision you could make is to ruin your chances to meet that loved one again in heaven by separating yourself from God. The degree to which you miss that loved one does not even compare to the degree of sorrow God feels toward you as you continue to live independent of him. He has a great plan for you, the world, and everyone else in it. He knows when we will be born and when we will die. He works everything together for our good because he loves us. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. The Bible tells us that when Christians are “…away from the body…”, then they are “at home with the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 5:8)

Re: Too Good to be True

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you would like to be a Christian, but it’s just too good to be true. You said, “All I have to do is trust Jesus as my Savior, and I get to live forever in heaven? There is no way that is real!” I know that you have had a hard life. You have had many disappointments and broken dreams. Your past experiences can make something as wonderful as heaven seem like a scam or wishful thinking, but God has really prepared a place for you in heaven. His plan for a painless life was ruined when Adam sinned, but it was restored when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. It is our second chance for the painless life God intended for us to live because he loves us so much. The worse thing you could do is pass up this amazing opportunity to humble yourself, admit you have sinned, and accept God’s forgiveness. Please accept this opportunity that God is giving you today. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

Re: Your Doubt in Jesus as the Only Way

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said you were thinking about becoming a Christian, but you could not believe Jesus was the only way. You said, “What about people in other nations that are isolated from the gospel?” You know Jesus performed lots of supernatural miracles when he walked on Earth, right? Did you know he has not stopped? People in other nations have said Jesus appeared to them in a dream or vision. Looking at statistics maps of religions by percentages are completely inaccurate. That is because Christian persecution is so violent and widespread that people must keep their Christian beliefs a secret to preserve the lives of their families. God will reach every person that sincerely wants to know his son in natural or supernatural ways. You do need to worry about them. You do need to concern yourself with your own relationship with God. Jesus is the only way to obtain eternity with God so do not delay. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ

P.S. Jesus himself announces, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) You can trust his words.
