Re: Biblical View of Slavery

Dear Doubting Thomas, You said, “I want to become a Christian, but I heard the Bible approves of slavery. Is that true?” It is evident from the Bible that God values freedom. He set his people free from the oppression of the Egyptians, and his own son died so mankind can have freedom from sin. During Biblical times, slavery was the compassionate alternative to killing warring groups of people. The enemies of God’s followers were fierce people who sacrificed their own children to false gods, among many other sins. God’s people were entrusted to be an example for other groups.  The Bible is an interesting book, and it is worthwhile to read for yourself from cover to cover—especially if you are interested in becoming a Christian! It might be best to start with the New Testament (since that is God’s promise for us today), then go back to read the Old Testament to understand the need for freedom in Christ. Sincerely, Your Friend in Christ
